Harbor Links September 2015 – Today I played the nine hole Executive Course at Harbor Links, Port Washington with the wonderful women of the EWGA Long Island Chapter.
The links style course looks very friendly until you are navigating it. With undulating greens and some tricky pin positions it was a good challenge. Both the fairways and the greens had been cored and sanded so there was no run on the fairway yet the greens were fast with the balls shooting across and changing direction when hitting bigger pieces of sand and sometimes pebbles.
This didn’t detract from the fun and all four of us had great things coming off our clubs. Somewhat inconsistently but great things none the less. I nearly drove the green on the par four eighth and while very satisfying I was three off the tee as my first sliced right into long unfriendly grass.
I had one terrible hole, starting with a drop kick off the tee that went about twenty metres. It did go straight ahead so that is a bonus but I punched it forward in small bursts and when I got to the green I’m sure had a thirty five putt (well that is what it felt like).
I played with Irene, Gayle and Evelyn in the gorgeous summer afternoon with a lovely breeze cooling the hot day.
My seven iron has become my go to club as my 3w and hybrids are not being very friendly and I can do great things with it. I was really pleased with my short game and my chipping and pitching is coming along nicely – Dave Bowlan, my golf coach will be pleased.
While I had a couple of wayward shots I was not too directionally challenged. I didn’t visit the beach at all today which was a pleasant change but that said if I do hit the sand, it doesn’t bother me, I just get the ball out.
I realized today not much bothers me or distracts me when I play. I can talk on my own backswing so others talking around me isn’t an issue. I also like to have music playing (which only happens when I play with some mates) and really golf is an easy game, you just get the ball in the hole.
I have had a wonderful few days in Long Island and have made many new friends who I will golf with again.
