I first made this recipe for Sel and Brett who were coming for dinner and were dairy, sugar and gluten free. They actually said they wouldn’t come because of their eating requirements but I love a challenge and had some things I wanted to try.
Chocolate mousse from avocado was one of these things. Did it really work and actually taste like a decadent chocolate mousse? I am pleased to say it did indeed.
In fact I made Sel and Brett guess what the ingredients were and they kept asking if I was sure they could eat it because it is sweet, creamy and delicious.
I have been in London visiting my sister for the last two weeks and have whipped this up the last two nights. The first night I used three different blenders (I miss my Blendtec) and ended up using a stick blender that managed to get the job done.
It is the simplest thing to make. Dump a bunch of ripe avocadoes in a bowl. Making this for five people last night I used four avocadoes. Add a couple of heaped tablespoons of raw cacao powder. Cocoa works just as well I just happen to prefer raw cacao powder. Add a dash of coconut water, a pinch of salt and lastly a sweetener, maple syrup is my go to for most things but I have used agave syrup in this as well.
And that is it. Blend away. I taste as I go and add more cacao or maple syrup as needed, then once blended to a creamy chocolaty deliciousness, I spoon into wine glasses and refrigerate. When ready to serve I top with in season berries, my favourites are strawberries and blueberries.
How can you not enjoy this?
It is also fun to get your guests to guess what it is made from, as it is so creamy it is hard to believe it is just five simple ingredients.
